US B1/B2 Visa: Flight Reservation Rules & Consular Interview Expectations

US B1/B2 Tourist & Business Visa: Flight Itinerary Rules

Applying for a US B1/B2 Visitor Visa involves completing Form DS-160 and attending an in-person interview at a US Embassy or Consulate. A common question among applicants is whether confirmed airline tickets are required.

US Department of State Policy on Flight Bookings

The US Department of State clearly instructs all visa applicants not to finalize travel plans or purchase non-refundable tickets until they have received their passport with an approved US visa stamp. In fact, presenting purchased tickets during your interview will not positively influence the consular officer's decision.

How Travel Itineraries Relate to DS-160

On Form DS-160, you will be asked whether you have made specific travel plans:

• If you select 'No', you provide an estimated arrival date, intended length of stay, and locations you intend to visit.
• If you select 'Yes', you provide flight details, arrival cities (e.g., New York JFK, Los Angeles LAX), and departure dates.

Bringing an Itinerary to the Consular Interview

Carrying a tentative flight reservation and hotel plan in your interview folder is useful if the officer asks specific questions regarding your planned dates and intended stay. A verifiable dummy ticket provides a clear answer without any financial exposure.
